Resolutions
For a long time I didn’t do New Year’s Resolutions, because my mom thinks they are stupid. But I started making them a few years ago.
My resolutions are usually general, which makes them doable and more difficult to discard. Last year’s were to save money and work out.

Beautiful Cinema
Tonight I watched Carl Theodore Dryer’s 1928 “Passion of Joan of Arc” at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. The film is beautiful—the cinematography and editing are enough to make you cry.
Most of the shots are extreme close-ups. I was so impressed by Maria Falconetti’s acting as she played Joan in this film. I can imagine that role must have taken so much focus and...
